Aspects Evaluated during the Admissions Process

The expansive field of study known as science and engineering is a discipline that aims to create a richer society through the fusion of the sciences—which serve as the foundation—and engineering—applied science. The College of Science and Engineering has therefore adopted a single department system, and so has only the Department of Science and Engineering. This is to ensure that students can learn a broad array of knowledge and skills that crosses the border between science and engineering. Our goal is to develop engineers capable of contributing to the wellbeing of humanity and society. We particularly value individuals who have the comprehensive academic abilities needed to study science and engineering, have clear objectives after enrollment, and proactively obtain a broad educational grounding as well as the knowledge and methodologies of specialized fields. The best candidates also have the desire and sense of purpose to help create and sustainably develop a next-generation society while also advancing science and societal change.

We also prefer individuals who have studied at universities and other institutes of higher learning in Japan or abroad, who have a strong desire and the ability to study at the Department of Science and Engineering, and a clear sense of purpose. Such individuals include (but are not limited to) those who have completed (or are expected to complete) two years of a four-year university program, (expected) graduates of a junior college, (expected) graduates of a technical college, and individuals who have completed (or are expected to complete) the postsecondary course of a specialized training college. We particularly value individuals who have the potential to independently and actively acquire the ability to investigate and solve the various science and engineering-related phenomena and problems needed to contribute to diverse societies. We expect them to leverage the knowledge and skills they have already acquired and maintain their desire to further study science and engineering.

Qualities and Experiences We Expect Students to Attain before Admission

The Department of Science and Engineering requires prospective students to have the core academic skills needed to study science and engineering as well as the cognitive skills to discover the true essence of problems and the ability to make sound judgments. In addition, we ask students to exhibit the self-expression skills to clearly and accurately explain ideas and ways of solving problems. Accordingly, the department asks prospective students to prepare for enrollment in the following ways:

  1. Master the basic academic skills of the primary subjects that their high school or other educational institute offers as required for their field of specialization—namely mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology—which form the foundation of science and engineering.
  2. Have a self-directed desire to acquire an educational grounding and knowledge from newspapers, books, the Internet and other media sources on a daily basis. In addition, demonstrate the desire to acquire the ability to think logically, make ethical decisions, and communicate using precise language.
  3. Acquire the fundamental English-language abilities and presentation skills that will serve as the basis of communication skills needed to collaborate in international society. They should also have the drive and sense of responsibility needed to engage fully in extracurricular activities, etc.

College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Admission Policy

The College of Architecture and Environmental Design has established the following admission policy based on the Kanto Gakuin University admission policy all colleges share, taking into consideration the relationship to the diploma and curriculum policies.

Department of Architecture and Environmental Design

Ideal Student Profile

The goal of the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design is to develop professionals capable of tackling the various problems society faces from a broad comprehensive and creative perspective. In other words, to produce individuals who have acquired a rich educational grounding and advanced, specialized knowledge and skills through learning specialized theories as well as applied and practical methods with a focus on the field of architecture and its environmental subfields. Accordingly, we seek students who have a strong desire and passion to gain expertise in specialized fields such as architecture, urban development, housing, structures, and environmental symbiosis. We also expect students to be flexible in their thinking, work in collaboration with others, and be able to convey their opinions regarding various issues of the fields of architecture and environmental design using appropriate language and means of expression.

Aspects Evaluated during the Admissions Process

In the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design, students first study core subjects such as physics, chemistry and mathematics as well as fundamental specialized subjects such as architectural design drafting and the first level of specialized courses. Next, they study the applied subjects in one of our five specialized courses of Architectural Design, Architectural Engineering, Architectural and Urban Renewal Design, Housing and Residential Design, and Environmentally Symbiotic Design. Finally, they move on to seminars and graduate research, which are the culmination of their specialized studies.

Our admissions process first confirms whether potential students possess the basic academic skills in engineering—namely mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, information, and the environment—a broad knowledge and educational grounding in areas such as history, culture and art; and language abilities, all of which are needed to pursue the abovementioned education. Potential students will also be evaluated in terms of, among other things, their desire to study architecture and urban development and actively help solve the societal and regional issues that surround them, their ability to think objectively, their sense of cooperation, and their ability to convey their opinions effectively to others.

Qualities and Experiences We Expect Students to Attain before Admission

The Department of Architecture and Environmental Design requires prospective students to have achieved a core mastery of mathematics, Japanese and English, which are fundamental subjects taught in high school. We also require that they independently and actively study physics, chemistry, biology and other science subjects, as well as history, geography and other subjects related to the humanities. In addition, the department recommends that prospective students prepare to study specialized subjects related to architecture and environmental design—such as architectural design drafting—in three ways. The first way is to develop their depiction and expression abilities through sketching and drawing buildings, landscapes and other subjects. The second is to visit buildings and other structures to experience the spaces they create. The third is to collect and organize information on urban and rural communities, architecture, housing and the social problems that surround them, search for solutions to said problems, and then put the solutions they have discovered into practice while consciously seeking the best ways to express their findings.

The Department of Symbiotic Design evaluates student abilities that will serve as the foundation of design in broad perspectives. In the general admission processes* of the first and second dates, for example, we allow potential students to select either Japanese or mathematics as one of their examination subjects. This allows the department to broadly admit both humanities-oriented and STEM-oriented students. For the AO (Admissions Office) admissions examination, the department has a project-based presentation category designed to evaluate potential students in terms of their logic, creativity, self-expression and presentation skills, based on the results of their efforts on an assigned project.
